Synopsis
My skill set in Salesforce was not limited to intense, practical, hands-on work experience in reporting but also modifying the Salesforce user interface people use, i.e. changing the layouts, adding more fields and sections, changing the labels, creating more Salesforce pages, and menus, setting up security, and going to the backend and the setup section though I don’t know them by heart since Salesforce has recently made a major move of revamping its user interface to what they call Salesforce Lightning.
I served as the backbone in providing Salesforce reports for all employees, at the same time I also bridge the worlds with MS Excel and other MS tools connecting to Salesforce objects for real time reporting from MS’s neck of the woods at times in an environment where Salesforce assumes a starring role enterprise wide.
Because one day...
It was funny, how some execs never really left their old life behind. They just added to it, like the old masters reusing a canvas. They painted over it, but it was still there underneath all those layers, and at some point it would make its presence known again...
“Would somebody mind explaining just what on earth is going on?", came a raised voice from the executive director, Susan, on knife-edge over a report.
Daniel Moore, the new Salesforce developer, stressing over a report he couldn’t produce according to specs. He told Jean privately what the termination arrangement would be should he be shown the door.
“Come on, Daniel, you’re stronger than this”, Jean says. “You’ve been down, no doubt about it. But we’re cut from the same cloth. You’re even Microsoft certified in addition to Salesforce. I understand. I am in technology. You’ve been way harder on yourself than you need to be. I’ll help you get through this.”
Because for many, old habits die hard. Technology all-too-powerful, the sky's the limit, expedition for any reports, anything possible.
“Oh, come on, Susan.” implored Jean. Daniel is a pro. He is top-shelf. I wouldn’t be able to produce that report either if it were me. In fact, no one you would ask could. And I am one who can modify the Salesforce interfaces, too, not just reports.” Is that what your right man pouring into your ear Salesforce to promise the whole world? We have an implausible scenario. Salesforce reporting does not have SQL. It’s a big shortcoming of the product from the technology perspective and one only needs to go online for Salesforce developers pleading Salesforce to provide it in reporting in future releases so they can field any reports requested. Without SQL, as technologists could put two and two together, it means we wouldn’t be able to do all of the reports requested. Some of them we have to do in Excel because Excel is an artist canvas and can have SQL, especially with MS Access. There are holes to be filled because of technological limitations."
Realization rocketing through her, Susan started to warm up. Daniel felt a crushing weight has been lifted off his chest.
